100 years of bumble bee decline in Belgium

Climate change as well as loss and fragmentation of habitats are among the principal causes of biodiversity loss. It is necessary to better understand how animal populations respond to environmental changes to be able to predict and reduce the long-term effects of these changes of biodiversity.

Bumble bees (Bombus) play a pivotal role in ecosystem services as pollinators of flowering plants. However, decrease of floral resources, degradation and fragmentation of their natural habitat as well as climate change have tremendously reduced their populations throughout the world. It is important to understand historical changes of bumble bee assemblages to be able to predict consequences of future environmental changes. This PhD study determines the variations of Belgian bumble bee populations over the past 100 years to evaluate future environmental impacts on these changes.
