Ecotoxicity of zinc (ZnO) and titan (TiO2) metal oxide nanoparticles on aquatic organisms
Due to their numerous properties, metal oxide nanoparticles are being applied in a growing number of consumer products such as cosmetics and electronics. Due to their widespread production and utilization they ultimately end up in aquatic ecosystems. However, the environmental impact of their disposal is still poorly understood. My PhD project aims at a better understanding of the potential toxicity for freshwater organisms of two of the most consumed nanoparticles, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) serves as model species. Both, in vitro and in vivo approaches will be employed in order to assess the impact of metal oxides nanoparticles on the immune functions of the fish.
