Thibaut Bouveroux, PhD (Marine ecologist and founder of Marine Mammal Expertise, Belgium) will talk about:

Research methods in ecology applied to marine mammals
My current research focuses on the ecology of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the coastal waters of Alabama (United States), as part of a large-scale project that I am leading with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. This project aims to assess the health of resident populations in order to better understand their dynamics and conservation issues, including:

  • estimating abundance and degree of residence,
  • studying habitat and spatial distribution,
  • genetic and ecotoxicological approaches.

This presentation will highlight the tools like the photo-identification and biopsy methods and the types of analyses we perform on the samples collected. I will discuss the results concerning the estimation of abundance and degree of residence, with a brief link to genetic and spatial analyses.
